Live updates from the second practice of Bears training camp

2022-07-30 03:35:11 By : Mr. TEYES Factory

The Chicago Bears returned to Halas Hall on Thursday morning for their first open practice of training camp.

With media and fans in attendance, there’s plenty to keep an eye on during Thursday’s practice, which will be another non-padded workout. That includes developments with the offensive line, other position battles on the roster, as well as quarterback Justin Fields in his first training camp as the starter.

Here are some instant observations from those in attendance at the Bears’ second practice of training camp:

— Will DeWitt (@Wi11DeWitt) July 28, 2022

#Bears coach Matt Eberflus is making the defense work early on in practice. On the whistle, the entire unit has to run to a specific corner in the end zone from their own 35-yard line. You can clearly hear Eberflus saying, "Run, Run" while staring at specific players.

— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 28, 2022

#Bears have multiple drills going on for the different position groups, and everywhere I look I see players being worked hard and going full speed.

No pads, but this practice is pretty intense.

— Will DeWitt (@Wi11DeWitt) July 28, 2022

Following up on this: I did see Teven Jenkins outside Halas Hall this morning, roughly 45 mins ago.

Something to follow for later. https://t.co/WRNJR0aDn8

Dazz Newsome with a nice rep against BoPete Keyes. Came back to the ball and grabbed it. #Bears

Velus Jones is a better route runner than he gets credit for. Nice win over Gordon. #Bears

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 28, 2022

Chase Allen bears good coverage from Brisker for a nice sideline dime from Fields. #DaBears

— Sam Householder (@SamHouseholder) July 28, 2022

There is a shiftiness in Velus Jones Jr.’s game that I really like. #BearsCamp

— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) July 28, 2022

Greg Stroman Jr has made a couple of very good plays on the ball forcing incompletions in 1v1s.

N’Keal Harry used his body and strength to win a rep against BoPete Keyes.

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 28, 2022

Cole Kmet with a nice catch against Eddie Jackson in coverage. Kmet created separation and extended to make the reception. Nathan Peterman with a good ball.

— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 28, 2022

In 1-on-1 WR vs. DB drill, Darnell Mooney catches one over the top of Jaylon Johnson. Could’ve been out of bounds but it was close.

— Sean Hammond (@sean_hammond) July 28, 2022

In one-on-ones on Field 3, Khalil Herbert w a jaw-dropping stop on a dime and burst past LB Noah Dawkins after making a catch in the flat.

OL with the 1s Rieff, Whitehair, Patrick, Mustipher and Borom. #DaBears

— Sam Householder (@SamHouseholder) July 28, 2022

Duke Shelley just made a good play by getting to Mooney near the line of scrimmage, but he still got yelled at.

“Knock the ball out!!”#Bears really are emphasizing takeaways.

First team OL at the start of 11 on 11: Reiff-Whitehair-Patrick-Mustipher-Borom

— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 28, 2022

Braxton Jones and Riley Reiff splitting 1st team reps with the 1s at left tackle this morning. There’s going to be a lot of moving parts on the O-line the next few weeks.

— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) July 28, 2022

Noteably Velus and Harry running with the 2s for now. #DaBears

— Sam Householder (@SamHouseholder) July 28, 2022

Bears are now rotating guys in with the 1s. Braxton Jones getting some reps in at LT, Doug Kramer at center. https://t.co/UqTIAJcD6y

— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 28, 2022

Center Lucas Patrick walks off with a trainer. Didn’t see what happened. Seems to be walking fine.

— Patrick Finley (@patrickfinley) July 28, 2022

Justin Fields with an absolute dime to Byron Pringle in 7-on-7. Goes off the WR’s hands to the dismay of the fans in the east bleachers.

— Dan Wiederer (@danwiederer) July 28, 2022

Already seen JF1 rolling out and moving more than I can remember at all last year. #DaBears

— Sam Householder (@SamHouseholder) July 28, 2022

When the 1s came back out for their second set of reps, Carter was back in at RG

— Alex Shapiro (@AlexShapiroNBCS) July 28, 2022

Bit of a rotation at LT. Riley Reiff and Braxton Jones. #Bears

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 28, 2022

I had Jaquan Brisker with a “pressure” in 11 on 11 team drills. Well, what can be considered a “pressure” in TC. #Bears

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 28, 2022

I’m telling you, the confidence and leadership is evident as Fields commands the huddle. You can see the leap coming.#BearsCamp

— Ben Devine (@Chicago_NFL) July 28, 2022

It looks like QB Nathan Peterman is taking all the backup reps. #BearsCamp

— Ben Devine (@Chicago_NFL) July 28, 2022

Very clear that any ball on the ground during team drills is considered live. Pass break up by Lamar Jackson gets taken to the endzone. #DaBears

— Sam Householder (@SamHouseholder) July 28, 2022

Lamar Jackson with a good pbu on Velus Jones! Defense picked up the loose ball and started to run it back.

You love to see it.

— Will DeWitt (@Wi11DeWitt) July 28, 2022

Braxton Jones has started mixing in with the 1s… could be related to a veteran ramp up plan for Reiff that Eberflus alluded to yday for some of the older guys

— Alex Shapiro (@AlexShapiroNBCS) July 28, 2022

— Will DeWitt (@Wi11DeWitt) July 28, 2022

#Bears have Cairo Santos and Trenton Gill alternate on kickoffs.

Gill was a kickoff specialist on college last year with a ton of touchbacks. Wonder if he can actually take those duties and allow Santos to focus only on field goals.

— Will DeWitt (@Wi11DeWitt) July 28, 2022

Lucas Patrick had to leave todays practice. He walked off the field with trainer Andre Tucker. But took the cart to locker room. Should note, locker room is a FAR walk from practice field.

— Bear Report (@BearReport) July 28, 2022

Add Nsimba Webster to the list of players.

— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 28, 2022

It’s hard to tell with no pads but Montgomery broke a would-be tackle on a run. #DaBears

— Sam Householder (@SamHouseholder) July 28, 2022

Looked like Eddie Jackson would have had the sack on Justin Fields. https://t.co/Rjsh7JmdS3

— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 28, 2022

Eddie Jackson starts 11-on-11 with pressure off the edge. Would have been a sack. #Bears

— Bear Report (@BearReport) July 28, 2022

Lamar Jackson with a pick 6!

Off a ball from Semien. Jackson has been making a bunch of plays today

— DaWindyCity Productions (@dwcprodz) July 28, 2022

Good practice for DB Lamar Jackson. Just picked off a pass thrown by Trevor Siemian intended for Velus Jones Jr. Broke up a pass earlier in practice.

— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 28, 2022

Fields drops the arm angle, short completion to Mooney. #DaBears pic.twitter.com/OPKGZ49LGt

— Jeff Berckes (@gridironborn) July 28, 2022

Nice side-arm pass from Justin Fields to a diving Darnell Mooney. Jaylon Johnson in coverage.

— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 28, 2022

We have Kyler Gordon back in the slot with Jaylon Johnson and Kindle Vildor playing outside.

— Will DeWitt (@Wi11DeWitt) July 28, 2022

Angelo Blackson gets his hand on a Justin Fields pass in 11-on-11s.

— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 28, 2022

Trestan Ebner is…. Fast. #Bears

— Bear Report (@BearReport) July 28, 2022

Good “blocking” on a screen to Herbert. Hard to say it’s blocking with no pads but you know what I mean. #DaBears

— Sam Householder (@SamHouseholder) July 28, 2022

With Lucas Patrick out and Doug Kramer repping with the first team, Dieter Eiselen is taking snaps with the second team. Sam Mustipher has been exclusively at guard.

— Sean Hammond (@sean_hammond) July 28, 2022

Quick Screen pass out to Herbert#DaBears pic.twitter.com/Gz8erZysBp

— Jeff Berckes (@gridironborn) July 28, 2022

Lamar Jackson (not that one) is having himself a day. A nice PBU early and a really impressive diving INT on Trevor Siemian just now. Also made a great diving play to secure the ball vs a surprise on-side kick.

— Adam Hoge (@AdamHoge) July 28, 2022

Defense clearly being drilled into them that every ball on the ground should be picked up and honestly, I love to see it. #DaBears

— Sam Householder (@SamHouseholder) July 28, 2022

Not a good series for Nathan Peterman and the offense in 11/11. Pass batted at line and then a fumble on a pitch right after. #Bears

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 28, 2022

Just your daily Jaquan Brisker made a good play on the ball tweet.

— Will DeWitt (@Wi11DeWitt) July 28, 2022

Kindle Vildor with nice coverage on Darnell Mooney as the outside corner to start 7-on-7s.

— Nicholas Moreano (@NicholasMoreano) July 28, 2022

The Bears have been moving rookie cornerback Kyler Gordon outside and to the nickel. This is the time to evaluate and the team loves his versatility.

— Chris Emma (@CEmma670) July 28, 2022

Every time the ball is on the ground after an incompletion, the defense is running to it while coaches are yelling “BALL! BALL!” Or “SWARM!”

— Bear Report (@BearReport) July 28, 2022

5-on-5s and not many options getting open for Fields. #DaBears

— Sam Householder (@SamHouseholder) July 28, 2022

Justin Fields goes to N’Keal Harry but the pass is slightly in front of him and bounces off his hands …

… and Eddie Jackson comes away with the interception!!

— Will DeWitt (@Wi11DeWitt) July 28, 2022

Defense definitely beat the offense in these 7 on 7’s

— DaWindyCity Productions (@dwcprodz) July 28, 2022

7v7 – defense dominating Fields starting of 0-4 with an INT (Eddie) pic.twitter.com/wm3mvqLgxT

Blasingame has had a few bad drops

— DaWindyCity Productions (@dwcprodz) July 28, 2022

For those of you playing along at home, Kramer back in at center when the Bears resumed 11-on-11s

— Alex Shapiro (@AlexShapiroNBCS) July 28, 2022

The offense isn’t really helping Justin Fields today with these drops…. #Bears

— Bear Report (@BearReport) July 28, 2022

Fields gets a nice ball in traffic to St. Brown in the middle of the field

— DaWindyCity Productions (@dwcprodz) July 28, 2022

Justin Fields and Cole Kmet just connected for about a 30 yard gain over the middle. Kmet came down with the pass in between two defenders. Really good throw by Fields. #Bears

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 28, 2022

Probably the best throw of the day so far by Justin Fields in 7 on 7, connecting with Cole Kmet on a deep ball over the middle of the field. Kmet came down with the ball in between 2 DBs.

— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 28, 2022

Fields finishes session 5/10. One pass was a clear drop from Blasingame. Ended with a deep completion to Kmet in traffic#DaBears https://t.co/95GgtskJ42 pic.twitter.com/3KEnLH3Mai

— Jeff Berckes (@gridironborn) July 28, 2022

Early impressions: Rookie OT Braxton Jones has a sturdiness to him that is attention-grabbing at times. Even if he isn’t a starter in Week 1 or even in ‘22, there’s something there.

— Dan Wiederer (@danwiederer) July 28, 2022

Fields threading the needle. N’Keal Harry couldn’t bring it in.

Kyler Gordon getting work in the slot… again. #Bears

— Bear Report (@BearReport) July 28, 2022

Darnell Mooney’s got hops. High pointed a ball over the middle and took it to the house in final team period.

— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 28, 2022

Justin Fields with a DIME to Darnell Mooney deep over the middle. Got a pretty good reaction from the crowd!

— Will DeWitt (@Wi11DeWitt) July 28, 2022

Get used to Justin Fields connecting with Darnell Mooney. Fields threw a ball down the middle of the field and Mooney caught the ball in stride for a touchdown.

I swear I’m seeing a lotta Lamar Jackson around the ball today. #BearsCamp

I really like when I see Jaquan Brisker line up in the box. He’s big! Loves to hit. Can’t wait for the pads to come on next Tuesday!

Practice is over. Another short one today during the team’s ramp up period before the pads come on in a few days. We’ll hear from OC Luke Getsy, Eddie Jackson, Kyler Gordon, Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet.

— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) July 28, 2022

Top 3 takeaways / observations from Day 2 of #Bears training camp:

1) Offense not quite ready for prime time. Lotttt of dropped passes.

2) George McCaskey excellent ushering fans into practice. Say what u want – George is a fine fellow.

3) Teven Jenkins nowhere to be found??
