Red Lake Falls Summerfest is today to Sunday, July 31 with activities for the whole family. There’s bingo, a car show, chain saw carving demonstrations, corn hole and basketball tournaments, live music, softball slam, dunk tank, parade, arts and crafts, kids’ activities, tour the historic Bottineau Homestead, dances, walleye supper, Fireman’s Breakfast and Catholic Daughters Breakfast, and concessions. The Crookston Fire Department will be doing a test of all sirens on Friday, July 29 at 1:00 p.m. as a new siren has been put up by the Holiday Station and they want to ensure it is operating correctly.

RiverView Health Rehab Services will hold “A Matter of Balance” a series of eight classes that will teach skills in improving balance, flexibility, and strength. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) announced that the department is sponsoring opportunities for people to properly dispose of their unwanted weed killers/herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and other pesticides from their farms, businesses, or homes. Minnesota pesticide users can bring their waste pesticides to any of the following events and dispose of up to 300 pounds, free of charge. For amounts greater than 300 pounds, citizens will have to call the MDA at 612-215-6843 to make arrangements for them. The day for Crookston is at the Ag Services at 3035 Highway 75 South in Crookston, on Thursday, August 11, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Trinity Lutheran and First Presbyterian Churches in Crookston Annual Senior Picnic at Trinity Point on Maple Lake will be Thursday, August 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a meal at 11:30, coffee, singing, bingo, pontoon rides, and fellowship. Rydell National Wildlife Refuge will host a special Mentored Youth Deer Hunt for kids ages 12-15 in cooperation with the Minnesota DNR and the Friends of Rydell and Glacial Ridge Refuges Association on October 29 and 30. Youth must attend a mandatory orientation session that happens on Sunday, October 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Interested youth must apply for this hunt no later than Friday, August 19. The Benedictine Living Community – Crookston Foundation’s Glow Golf Tournament will take place on Saturday, September 10 at Minakwa Golf Course. Registration starts at 3:30 p.m. with a 4:00 p.m. shotgun start.  A total of 18 holes will be played, 9 in the daylight, then after supper, the last 9 in the dusk/dark. There will be 18- four persons teams. Registration is $90 and includes green fees, supper, snacks, 1 glow golf ball, and glow accessories. Carts are not included. There will be Raffle Drawings and awards. Proceeds will be used towards the much-needed repairs and updates of the elevators. The Crookston High School is opening its Weight Room for all High School students to use this summer. The Room will be open Monday through Friday for 9th-12th grade students from 6:00 to 7:15 a.m. or 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. and Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for 7th and 8th-grade students from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

Twig and Branch Collection will be held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, running from May through October. Place the materials on your curbside. Branches must be cut into four-foot lengths and bundled in order for the crews to take them away. Any branches or tree trunks not cut to this length and bundled will be left for the owner to haul away. Twigs may be in boxes or bags. Individuals removing their diseased elm trees should call City Hall to schedule a pickup.

Second booster doses of Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are now available at Altru Clinic in Crookston for people 50 and older and those 12 and older who are immunocompromised. The second booster dose must be administered at least four months after the first booster. Adults who received Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) for their primary vaccine and booster dose at least four months ago may now receive a second booster dose of Pfizer or Moderna only. The Crookston Public Library’s Books & Brews Book Club meet on the fourth Tuesday of every other month at 6:30 p.m. at Drafts Sports Bar and Grill. They will discuss books and enjoy beverages. Appetizers are provided by the Friends of the Crookston Public Library; participants are responsible for the cost of their own food and drinks. All are welcome.
