Wish you could make your closet bigger without calling in a construction crew? For tips on how to maximize small closet space, we reached out to Senior Designer Miki Matsumoto with Closets by Design. Here’s what we learned.

When you open your closet, do items fall out and crash to the floor? Or do you have to fight your way through loads of junk to find what you’re looking for? It’s a common problem—especially with small closets.

To turn your closet from mess to Pinterest-worthy success, you’ll need to set aside some time to remove unnecessary belongings and free up some space.

Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think.

To hang or to fold: it’s the classic closet debate. When trying to maximize closet space, which should you choose? According to Miki, it all depends on the item and size of your closet.

Here are three clothing items you should fold for better closet space and why:

Whether you own two pairs or 10, jeans are one clothing item you’ll likely find in most everyone’s wardrobe.

Why you should fold them:

When cooler weather rolls in, clothing items get bigger and bulkier. While sweaters are great for warmth, they can make closet storage tough.

Why you should fold them:

As many jeans as you own, you likely own double the amount of T-shirts. With limited closet space to store them, folding your T-shirts may save the day.

Why you should fold them:

If you’re like me, your closet houses all of your clothes, mixing all the seasons together year-round. If your closet offers meager space, consider rotating your clothing with the seasons.

“You don’t need sweaters hanging in your closet when it is 95 degrees outside! Pack up these items and move them to another location like the garage or attic until you need them again.”

I find the toughest part of organizing is figuring out how to best store small items. Instead of shoving all of these items into a box, Miki has a better solution.

“Use baskets, stackable containers or drawer dividers to organize small items on your shelves like belts and scarves.”

Wave your magic wand—it’s time for the ultimate illusion. Here are some easy ways to make your closet appear larger:
