The Newport Folk Festival has a long track record of historical moments. The long-running festival out of Newport, Rhode Island has hosted some of the most memorable live moments in recent music history. Dating back to 1965 when Bob Dylan set the folk world ablaze by playing an electric guitar live for the first time in his career to the legendary “Pixies Go Acoustic” set in 2005, Newport Folk Festival has always been a safe haven for legendary moments.

This past weekend (July 22-24), Newport Folk Festival hosted another three-day extravaganza of legendary performances. The first surprise came during the “American Tune Review”, a tribute to Paul Simon hosted by Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats. The set was filled with Rateliff and company performing songs from Simon’s legendary songbook. If that wasn’t enough, Paul Simon himself came out of retirement to perform the final four songs of the review show including a select few solo acoustic performances. The second surprise guest of the weekend was even more unbelievable.

This past weekend, the enigmatic Joni Mitchell returned to live performance, her first live performance since 2013. On the last day of this year’s festival, Brandi Charlie brought the previously-retired goddess of folk-pop out to perform some of the artist’s greatest hits.

The Newport Folk Festival has built up a long, storied history of surprise guests. They have a reputation for rolling out their lineup over the year instead of releasing a poster with all the artists set to perform. They are known for their surprise guests and never disappoint by recruiting the most elusive artists to return to their rightful place on stage.

Glide has gone through and compiled the most electric unannounced performances in the festival’s history.

The blueprint band for modern indie rock took the stage in Newport in 2005, one year after their reunion. After they disbanded in 1994 after their dominance of the rock genre in the 80s and 90s, the band’s original lineup reconvened in 2004 and a year later, found themselves on stage in a way they never had before. The band went completely acoustic, dropping any preconceived notions of their alt-rock roots. The performance was documented and flipped into a full film titled “Pixies Acoustic: Live in Newport” and was released the following year.

My Morning Jacket & Roger Waters (2015) The Pink Floyd legend and trailblazing artist Roger Waters took the trip to Rhode Island for what was painted as a typical set. While an appearance from the elusive frontman is always a cause for headlines, it was his backing band that made the set so special. Rock legends My Morning Jacket took over backing duty for the Waters’ as he tore through songs from his legendary songbook and a performance of “Crystal Clear Brooks” which was freshly released by Waters at the time.

Nowadays, Jame Taylor is a household name. One of the best-selling artists of all time, Taylor paid his dues but everyone starts somewhere. Taylor credits his appearance at the festival in 1969 as his first big break in the music biz. Fast forward a decade or two along with a couple million records sold later, Taylor returned to his roots. He appeared as a surprise guest on the main stage in the mid-afternoon of the 2015 festival. His set included classics from his lengthy discography and was backed by a small band that included his wife, Kim, on vocals.

Another alumni of the folk festival, Kris Kristofferson returned to the stage in 2016 as one of the surprise guests for the festival. Kristofferson was an unknown star in 1969 when Johnny Cash welcomed him to the stage to perform a few tunes. This performance is credited to the launch of Kristofferson’s legendary career and it came full circle on that weekend in 2016 when he performed an intimate set for the festival at their Museum Stage. He was 80 years old at the time of his return and put on a tear-inducing performance.

John Prine & Roger Waters (2017)

In the year 2017, John Prine had already cemented himself as one of the most important voices in folk music. His performance at that year’s festival was billed as “John Prine & Friends”, who those friends were would be the highlight of the weekend. Prine shared the stage with the likes of Margo Price, Justin Vernon, Jim James, and most notably, Roger Waters. The duo shared the stage for a performance of “Hello In There” and was memorialized in a live album released last year.

Mumford & Sons have one of the most dedicated fan bases in music, and their diehard fans were elated when they made a surprise appearance for a superjam at the festival in 2018. The band shared the stage with the likes of Brandi Charlie, Maggie Rogers, and Phoebe Bridgers. The highlight of the night is when all the special guests of the evening were brought back and were joined by Mavis Staples for a performance of “The Weight”, a classic recorded by Staples in 1968.

One of the most, if not the most iconic country stars of all time Dolly Parton graced Rhode Island with her presence on the main stage in 2019. She gathered some of the most iconic voices in country/bluegrass music for a historic set. The all-female guest list included Courtney Marie Andrews, Rachel Price, and Lucy Dacus, just to name a few. This marked the first time a headlining set was made up entirely of women in the festival’s long history. The all-star lineup covered songs from Joni Mitchell, The Indigo Girls, and The Highwomen.
